The once-rising literary star Olivia Fitzgerald is down on her luck. Her most recent novel—a retelling of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca—was a flop, her boyfriend of nine years just dumped her and she’s battling a bad case of writer’s block. So when her agent calls her with a high-paying ghostwriting opportunity, Olivia is all too willing to sign the NDA.

At first, the write-for-hire job seems too good to be true. All she has to do is interview Henry “Ash” Asherwood, a reclusive mega billionaire, twice named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, who wants her help in writing a book that reveals a shocking secret about his late grandmother and Daphne du Maurier. But when Olivia arrives at his Malibu estate, nothing is as it seems. The more Olivia digs into his grandmother’s past, the more questions she has—and before she knows it, she’s trapped in a gothic mystery of her own.

Mon avis : 

La Californie est un endroit que j’aime beaucoup pour y avoir passé quelques temps avec mon mari pour notre voyage de noces. Et puis un roman qui parle de Daphne du Maurier forcément je fonce sans réfléchir.

J’ai passé un très bon moment avec ce roman mais j’ai eu plus de mal avec les personnages. L’intrigue est en effet très réussite, le suspense est là, la construction du roman est bonne avec des chapitre court et des révélations qui tombent toujours à pic. Mais j’ai eu beaucoup plus de mal avec Olivia et Ash. LA jeune femme est en effet, complétement naïve ou vraiment incapable de réfléchir par elle-même mais toutes ses décisions sont sans fondement. Ash est censé être attirant, un fantasme pour les lectrices féminines mais il m’a laissé de marbre. Il est beaucoup trop prétentieux, imbu de lui-même. Avec d’autres personnages, j’aurais sans doute eu un coup de cœur pour le roman mais là ça a un peu gâché ma lecture.
